Gary Gurney
I am driven by an ongoing curiosity to learn, evolve and upgrade my skills and understanding to help clients find relief from poor posture, chronic pain, tension, stress and anxiety which result from injuries, accidents, traumas and overuse issues. Client's specific goals are varied, but nearly all seek lasting relief from some form of chronic discomfort.
In 1992, while studying for my BA in Religion at Columbia University I began an intensive practice of Yoga and Meditation. These practices sparked an interest in the healing arts and continue to drive my curiosity in the study of Anatomy and Physiology, Embodiment, Trauma and various Healing Arts.
In 1996, I began studying various forms of bodywork which culminated in becoming a licensed massage therapist in 1998 after training at the Fingerlakes School of Massage in Ithaca, NY. I moved to my home state of Maine that year to start a massage practice, but found myself dissatisfied with the results and quickly shifted to teaching yoga at Portland Yoga Studio and various other venues until 2006.
Upon receving Rolfing in 2004, I experienced profound relief from anxitey, stress and chronic discomfort that was only temporarily addressed by years of meditation, yoga and massage. "Feeling grounded" was no longer an idea but a felt reality I had unkowingly been looking for. I felt more at ease in my body than at any point previously in my life. Instead of being a burden, or something apart from my mind, my body registered as a deep well of support for the lived experience of the bodymind continuum.
I found my employment path and passion in 2005 while attending the Rolf Institute for Structural Integration (now The Dr. Ida Rolf Institute) and became a certified Rolfer in 2006.
Outside of the office, I enjoy reading, dancing, lifting weights, anything outdoors, cooking and spending time with my family and friends.
I am always happy to meet new people, so feel free to call or email me and discuss whether Rolfing is the right choice for your needs!
