FAQ's
What is Rolfing?
Rolfing is a whole body approach that aims to re-align the body (ie improve posture) by a hands-on manipulation of the fascia (aka Connective Tissue Matrix) so as to reduce or eliminate chronic tension, stress and pain. The connective tissue wraps everything in your body–it’s the stringy white stuff that you see in the cross section of a roast–and creates and holds the shape of your body. Through skillful manipulation, I work with you to release longstanding patterns of tension caused by repetitive tasks and activities, injuries new and old, traumas and chronic stress.
How is Rolfing different from massage?
The style of touch in a Rolfing session is often much slower than massage--it works very precisely on specific areas that have a large impact on the body. As a result, the quality of sensation is very different from massage, you will notice that immediately. Also, Rolfing sessions are dynamic and interactive; at times, you will be asked to move while you are receiving the work. This dynamic approach quickly releases deep tension and begins to retrain the nervous system for more efficient movement. Body “learning” is a felt process that Rolfing clients find deeply satisfying and long lasting. Clients often leave sessions feeling lighter, taller, more grounded and energized--the impact is very different from a typical massage.
Does Rolfing hurt?
Rolfing sessions do not have to hurt. As the client, you are in charge of your own experience and through dialogue, we find the exact right amount of pressure that allows you to work through the tension in a way that gives lasting results. Your connective tissue is part of your nervous system so it’s important to find a level that allows your system to fully process the work. I work with your body, not on it!
How many sessions will it take to fix my problem?
It depends on how long you have had your issue. If it’s new, six months or less, a few sessions can resolve your problem. Anything longer than a year will likely require more sessions, but we will only continue work as long as you are satisfied you are making progress.
What is the ten series?
The ten series is a systematic approach developed by Dr. Ida Rolf to restructure the body, head to toe to improve posture, alignment and an overall sense of well-being and ease. Each session has a specific focus that builds on the previous session to eventually create the sense of a whole body reboot! The ten series protocol is the basic training at the Rolf Institute.
I don’t want ten sessions, will you still work with me?
Yes! I am happy to give single sessions or just a few to resolve whatever issue you come in with. My goal is to help you achieve your goals as quickly as possible. ManI do not expect a client to sign up for a ten series.
What do I wear?
Because Rolfing sessions are dynamic the client wears loose fitting clothing you might wear to a PT session. Sports bra and shorts for women and shorts or boxer briefs for men. I can work through clothing though thick synthetic fabrics can limit the options for tissue work.
Do you take insurance?
Insurance does not cover Rolfing. If you have an HSA or flex spending account, I can receive payment that way. I also accept major credit cards, checks, cash and Venmo for payment.
